Dec 4, 2010 - As a result of the April 20, 2010, BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico, on May 24, BP announced a commitment of up to $500 million to the Gulf Research Initiative (GRI) Open Research Program to study the impact of the Deepwater Horizon incident, and its associated response, on the environment and public health in the Gulf of Mexico. Jun 3, 2010 - While speculation has run rampant as to where the oil from BP’s Deepwater Horizon will disperse, Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s (DISL) undergraduate Oceanography class will be searching for hard facts as they assist with data collection and oil spill trajectory forecasting. On Friday June 4, 2010, the class will be deploying seven surface drifters offshore southwest of Dauphin Island to track the currents carrying the oil slicks. [more...]

May 7, 2010 - On Tuesday, May 4, scientists from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) recovered what appear to be small amounts of oil and tar about 35 miles south of Dauphin Island.

As part of the pre-spill baseline conducted by the DISL, hundreds of samples including grassbed surveys from Louisiana to Florida, reef fish age and growth community assessments, ecosystem structure, and water column sampling of fish eggs and larvae have been acquired. At times the Laboratory had as many as seven vessels working at the same time. Over thirty faculty, staff and students at the Laboratory logged over 1300 hours of effort over the past nine days. April 29, 2010 - In a continuing effort to provide additional baseline information prior to anticipated oil spill exposure, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Mississippi Laboratory have launched a joint effort to obtain tissue and community samples from the area of Dauphin Island, Alabama through Chandeleur Sound off the east coast of Louisiana. Shelby Center for Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management, is sending a series of cruises out to sample several critical conditions in the path of the massive oil spill threatening the central Gulf coast.
